Theo - 15 months

Before we head into his doctor's office tomorrow for his 15 month check up and vaccinations, I thought I'd try and remember everything the little guy has been up to.

Theo is walking around quite well and tries to run now.  He can climb up onto things and climb down from the couch and bed. (He's also managed to throw himself over the crib railing, but that was my fault for not putting it all the way up. He landed on his butt though, which is quite properly chunky, so no harm done.  Bad mommy.)

He's trying to dress himself in little ways - like holding up his socks or shoes and trying to fit his foot into them.

image

He loves going outside.  The swingset and slide in the backyard get a lot of use, despite their relatively deteriorated state.  The baby wagon we got as a gift for the other two years ago is seeing new use again, as Jordan loves to give Theo wagon rides (and half the other little kids in the complex.)

He knows when it's time to drop off Mina and Jordan to school and starts heading up the stairs; and in the afternoon, I will say, "It's time to go pick up the big kids!"  He gets so excited.   If I ask him, "Where are your shoes?  Go get them, and we can go."  He will wander over to the shoe cubby and bring back a pair of his shoes.

image

It's reassuring to know he understands everything we say to him, because he isn't saying much yet.  He will shake his head, no, to indicate his displeasure with something (Time for nap?  Lots of head shaking no.)  But not a lot of words.  That's sort of odd, as I recall Jordan and Mina babbling on endlessly and Mina having full conversations with people at a very early age.

Theo can say "up," "baba," "ga (meaning go,) "dada," "mama" and some sound that is like "dah" to mean downstairs, where the basement playroom is.

I know, you can't compare.  Of course we do though.

That's what parents do - whether they are comparing their own kids with each other or one kid to a stranger's.  (I do that too.)  Theo goes to baby gym every week and loves it.  I on the other hand sometimes wonder why he isn't doing x, y or z.  I don't notice too many kids Theo's age talking either.

This comparison issue is one more reason I refuse to join organized mommy play groups.  I am just over that stage in my life where new moms dissect their kid's milestones with each other ad nauseum.  Yes, your 15 month old knows his letters.. congrats.  Mine is still just babbling, and I refuse to stress about it yet.

(Sorry if you are a new first time mom.  I'm old and cranky, I admit it.  Please join mommy groups if you want to.  I did when I was younger and I am still friends with some of the women. But when you are my age, you just don't want to hear a young whippersnapper waxing eloquent on the joys of babywearing or breast feeding until the kids are driving or whatever new fad is making the rounds.  Older, tired moms like me just want to get through the day, keep their kids alive, fed, educated and independent enough to learn how to pour a glass of wine for their elders at dinner.  Yes, on that front, BTW. Go, Mina!  Parenting win. )

I will pause long enough to note that Theo is amazing.  Every time I take him to the store, inevitably someone will comment on what a happy baby he is.  I don't want to jinx it, but he seems like a pretty content little guy.  I was worried the stomach scare he had back in August would affect him, but he seems to have gotten over it.  Maybe third kids know they have to be cute in order to survive.

We've had to play around a bit with his diet, as too much milk was constipating him.  He eats pretty much everything though, or will at least try it.  When he doesn't like something (lately that seems to be most proteins) he will get this look on his face and push the food out of his mouth.

I've learned my lesson from Jordan though.  I am not sweating it.  He eats what I'm serving or he just goes to bed.  There will be choices, but unless the meal I'm making is too spicy, I don't make a lot of alternative dishes.  His current favorites are anything pasta, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, soups, cheese, yogurt, strawberries, raspberries, pear, grapes.  I was impressed he handled tofu last night that was cooked in an Asian sweet and sour soup.  But who knows, a week from now he may hate it.

image

The big kids really get a kick out of him too, especially when he's in performing mood.  At meal times, we try to talk to him and get him to point out his eyes, nose, mouth, belly.  He can wave and give high fives now.  He's also just learning how to "blow kisses."  His version is a little odd, but Jordan took a little video of it the other night.

He sleeps great, although he is an early riser.  He does one to two naps a day depending on what time he wakes up and whether there are things we have to do that day.  We are pretty much using sippy cups all the time now, as opposed to bottles, and he is trying to feed himself a lot (messy!)

He loves to share.  That just kills me.  He will take a bite of something then hand it out to me or Jeff or the kids and say, "ygum?"  I can't tell if he means, "yum," as I am always saying, "yummy"" to him as I feed him.  The way he intones it as a question though makes me laugh.

Other random stuff - he's a tall one.  Another feature that's different than Jordan or Mina.  He's recently gotten into being read to, and will drag his favorite books over to me to read to him.  He's definitely more physical, in terms of trying to do things.  He's more adventurous, and thus less cautious about risks (throwing himself out the crib, leaping off the steps in the front of the house.)  He gets very attached, and will cry when someone he loves leaves him - thus making school drop off every morning so much fun.  He's got almost all his teeth!!  Including molars?  How is that possible@?  Unfortunately, he's prone to biting, which may be to alleviate the pain in his gums.  I'm working on getting that to stop, but he's resisting.  He still has a noticeable bilateral inversion of his feet.  Imagine a ballet dancer's feet turned outwards.  He doesn't seem bothered by it, and at his last check up his doctor said it would correct itself.  It hasn't yet though.

Not looking forward to the shots tomorrow but I'm glad to be able to go in and talk to his pediatrician here on the island.  She's wonderful, and I'm curious what she things about Theo's progress.

Theo takes a stroll.

At 14 months, Theo is finally walking from room to room.  This video captures him taking steps across the basement, stumbling, but correcting himself enough to land in heap next to me.

The look on his face at the end just kills me.

Disney 2015 - Vacationing in the land of the Mouse (with three kids.)

1-DSC_0260-001

We just returned from a Walt Disney vacation in Florida, and I already want to go back.  I have become such a Disney junkie over the years.  I think I may love it more than the kids.

We went during our "Mid-term break."  This is a distinctly UK tradition that is followed here in Bermuda, wherein the kids get a week off in October.  Since no school in the US has this holiday, it is wonderful time to go visit massive theme parks like Disney.  I personally lost track of how many Brit accents I heard whilst we were wandering the parks.  (Yes, whilst is a word.  See what I did there?)  Did I use it right?  Brit friends, help me out.

It is an especially fantastic time to go if you want to see Disney done up for the fall.

This is our dear friend K, who is the absolute best person in the world to travel with, bar none. Seriously. When the sh-t hits the fan in my own life, I ask myself .. how would K handle this? She is that good.

I'm not really sure why I love this place so.   Disney is over the top, expensive as heck, and absolutely mental in terms of planning, hyper stimulation and consumer spending ... but still...

We had the best time.

Does is make any sense to bring a one year old?  Heck yeah.

Did we have an awesome time with our fabulous friends?  Oh yeah.

Was trick or treating at Mickey's Not so Scary Halloween Party cool?  Yes!!!!  (even in the rain.)

Does Disney think of crafty ways to get you to buy their products. (I'm looking at you Memory Maker.)

1-DSC_0330

Kidding aside, I do love Disney.  They know how go do it well.  All of it.  We have done it with the kids several times now, and each time, it seems to become more fluid.  Our first time was a complete disaster, of course... Jordan in the Disney hospital with a raging fever, flu across the board spread to friends with us, money wasted .. Etc.

Since then, we've worked out some kinks...

1-DSC_0353-001

I'm not going to pretend it was easy traveling with a 13/14 month old.  The airline flights alone (for us, it meant two plane rides both ways) were brutal enough to make the most seasoned parent nervous.  While it's nice that his entry into the parks is free, throwing him into this mix meant accepting some sleepness night, some overstimulation, and some fussiness from the extreme change in routine.

And he was constipated.  Enough said.

But we kept our expectations low and were lucky to be with understanding friends who pinched in and helped make the experience memorable for all of us.  And on the plus side ... His screaming in the security lines at the airport became a fast pass of its own.  I am not joking.  They pulled us out and got us through longer lines than I have ever seen.

And of course, at Disney, having an infant means you can legitimately use the rider switch program.  Combined with a fast pass, it is just about the quickest way for a group like ours to go.  Extra bonus points for the kids tall enough to go as solo riders.. (I am telling you, our friends have taught us the best Disney tips.)

Added discovery - the infant care centers located in each park.  I took advantage of one on our first day at Epcot, and brought Theo in there for a diaper change, a cuddle and some down time because he was over stimulated.  The place was amazing - quiet and serene in the midst of KA-POW happening outside.  Anything you need for a baby is there (diapers, formula, baby food, basic first aid care, changing tables, little bathrooms.)

Apart from private nursing rooms,  they also had a room set to the side with Disney movies playing on a low volume to keep the slightly older siblings occupied.  I had read about these in the Unofficial Walt Disney Guide, and was so glad I remembered.  After the big kids and adults had finished their ride, they met Theo and I and we regrouped.  Theo was calm again and we could venture forth.

1-DSC_0549-001

We visited the parks we wanted to see, prioritized our rides and adventures, and made the most of what time we had.  The magic band system, particularly when used as a guest at an on site resort, is awesome.  Our super savvy Floridian friends booked us all at a great on site hotel (Tree house villas - the three bedroom option for those staying at the Saratoga Springs Disney resort).  With our own cars, traveling between the parks and the room was much simplified.

There's so much to say about each individual park, and the best way of navigating them.  Much of it depends on what your group consists of and what your priorities are.  Like I said, I really kept my expectations low.  Since we have done Disney before, done the character breakfasts and reservations at fancy restaurants .. for this trip, my only goal was getting Theo to see Buzz and Woody.

Really.  That is it.

1-STUDIO_PIXARPLCHR1_7500773366

Having accomplished that, I sat back and watched in awe as my big kids ran off and tackled the Tower of Terror, Test Track and Mount Everest expeditions. We let them run off and do their rides and meet us back at designated locations, so I could manage the baby.

1-AK_EXPEDITIONEVERESTRIDE_7501564898

And just as I thought they had all and grown on me, I saw this happen:

1-AK_UPCOUNTRYLANDINGCHAR_7501280148-001

Disney brings out the kid in all of us.  Even the kids.

Especially the kids.

Other highlights:

 - The Food and Wine day at Epcot.  Yes, I would like the three wine pairing and cheese tray, thank you.  Sushi and pineapple sake?  Go on then...

-  Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party fireworks and Boo to You Parade;

-  The Kilamanjaro safari ride at Animal Kingdom (done this three times and I still love it.);

-  Beating Jeff's score  on the Toy Story Mania Ride;

-  The creepy crawly effects on the "It's Tough to be a Bug" ride at Animal Kingdom. Very cool.

All I want for Christmas is a Disney Annual Pass.  I know, in fact, I am quite certain, I can make it economically feasible within  year.

Theo at 12 months - Happy Birthday!

Twelve months passed by both quickly and slowly - if that makes any sense.  The early days (and months) of sleepness nights and zombie days felt like they would never end.

image

The days rolled on though and gradually, it became possible to look up from the haze of newborn days and rejoin the world. Over time, that little bundle developed a personality of his own.

My little guy at 12 months:

P6 (5th grade) P5 (4th grade) and Theo - 1 year old

Happy, easy- going, great disposition. He loves his big brother and sister, he eats just about everything. Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Elmo and Mickey Mouse are his current favorite cartoon characters. He mostly sleeps through the night, with an occasional wake up for a cuddle ( this habit needs to be nipped in the bud -  I'm looking at you, Jeff.)

Although he's not walking independently yet, he's taken his first steps and will walk holding hands with someone.

I can't believe how many teeth he has!

image

His favorite foods are peanut butter, Cheerios, French toast, pasta, and ice cream. He loves fruit like strawberries and raspberries; and he is the only kid of mine who devours asparagus.

My smiley guy.

Meeting Elmo at his friend's birthday party.

To celebrate Theo's first birthday, we had a small party at home with a handful of friends. Jeff barbecued some streaks and we had tons of appetizers, sides and desserts. Woody and Buzz made an appearance on the cake, and the little guy was as happy as you can imagine.

Such a cliché, but this year flew by!

Theo at 11 months.

Theo:

My memory is not what it used to be, so bear with me while I try to document some of Theo's infancy before it all fades away.

At 11 months, this is what we've got so far:

He's crawling like a champ.. i.e really fast, so I have to watch him at all times.  He started crawling at 9 months, just like his brother and sister.  No walking yet, but he does like to be "walked," i.e I hold his hands and we walk around the house together.  He has a funny turning in of his foot that I want to speak to the doctor about.

He has also made it up the stairs now.  Argh.

eating:  This kid makes me smile.  He will try anything.  He is like Mina in that regard.  She was always an adventurous eater.. unlike Jordan.  Theo has eaten things like chicken tikka masala, tuna fish, pasta, steak, chicken in all forms, hamburger, club sandwiches (I'm looking at you gluten free club at Tuckers), all fruits, yogurt, cheese, avocado, asparagus, broccoli, carrots, rice..)  Honestly, I just feed him off my plate now.  The baby food days are basically over, although we keep a few packets around for convenience when travelling.  I tried to give him some baby oatmeal the other day (something he used to love at 6 months) and he practically spit it out at me, with a look that said, "Are you serious?  Where's my French toast?"

words:  Nothing yet.  A bit strange on this front as he was saying "mama" and "baba" at 6 months.  Then he suddenly stopped.  He does watch my mouth sometimes as I talk, so I try to slow down what I am saying, and I repeat words ad nauseum, labeling everything that comes into contact with his hands.  He is definitely babbling.

expressions:  he's not talking yet, but I absolutely flip out with joy every time he crinkles his nose when he laughs, which is often.  And he has 8 teeth already!!!  It's the cutest thing.

likes:  sweets, chocolate, ice cream, pasta, watermelon, washing his hands, the pool, the beach, the waves crashing on the shore, the picture of Jordan on the beach in his room, the pictures of Jordan and Mina in the kitchen, pulling Oscar's tail (poor Oscar - heavily rewarded every time with peanut butter), walks in his stroller, swings, his lovey, the fuzzy blanket Grandma H got him, pulling things out of the lower cabinet in the kitchen, flipping pages of his books.

dislikes: long car rides, being made to wait on the changing table for his bottle before nap, sitting in his high chair for too long, not being allowed to drink our coffee, wine, beer or diet soda.

Coffee will have to wait.

Ten Month Old Theo

On the Move:

Crawling began at 9 months, but he's really on a roll now.  He's tried tackling the stairs already.

Nonstop.

He's pulling open panty cupboards and shelves:

Rearranging my pantry. #OCD #thatsmyboy

He's even been caught trying to climb out of the crib.

"Help me out bro!"

Definitely more adventurous than the other two!

Theo food

Things have changed in the world of feeding since I had my older kids. Back when Jordan and Mina were babies, I was told not to introduce potential high allergy foods like nuts until two years. Since then, the thinking has gone back to early introduction (ie nine months for us.)

My reaction was disbelief.

"So, you want me to bring him into the office and try out peanut butter here?

"Oh no, Mrs Trimarchi. Just put some on bread and give him a little at home and just watch him.  He'll either throw it up immediately or it will be undigested in his diaper. Don't worry. He won't stop breathing."

Fast forward, Theo has been pretty much eating everything that winds up on a plate.

Father's Day cinnamon rolls were a big hit.

So was the chicken tikka masala and rice, the broiled halibut with butter and herbs, hamburger, ice cream, apple butter spread, pancakes with chocolate chips, cheese sticks and French toast. Not all at once.

He's also happy to eat my daily English muffin with peanut butter and some basic things like bananas and nectarines. Pretty much any fruit is a big hit.

Having lived through one very picky eater, I am over the moon with this new relaxed approach to eating. Fingers crossed it lasts!

I think back to when Jordan was this age.  Oy. The tears, the sighs, the eye rolling, the weepy visits to the pediatrician.

That was me.

Jordan would just turn his head every time the spoon approached his mouth.

Gratitude all around for the third baby charm.

Fast forward ten years.

A quick trip to Warwick Bay playground..

Life lately.

Just some snippets to end the week with.

Wow. These high chairs have come a long way since I needed them last.

A Sunny Break in January

With the Northeast expected to get blanketed this week, I can't help but appreciate the glorious weekend we had in Bermuda. Theo and I had a lovely walk up Point Shares Rd, and admired the view.

image

We got Jordan a Wubble ball for his birthday, and we finally had a chance to test it out at the Botanical Gardens.

Lots of open space there.

And sunshine!

Stay warm and safe US friends.

Remember, it's only a two hour flight to BDA from most east coast airports.

Our 2014 Bermuda Year in Review

Time for our annual year in review!  It's cliché, but certainly true for us, that so much can change in one year.

January 2014

As I was preparing for Jordan's 9th birthday, I distinctly recall feeling off sorts.  I was too busy googling how to make a Minecraft birthday cake, and losing my mind copying Pinterest ideas for a  to focus on what was rapidly developing.  That is, I was pregnant.

DSC_0015

Fast forward to Jordan's actual birthday weekend - spent in Connecticut at his first gymnastics meet.  I knew by now that I was pregnant with Theo.  Not that this would interfere with watching the meet.

Jordan scored high enough to medal on rings as well as earn an all-around place for level 4.

DSC_0146

We also got a chance to see the cousins!  That was one of the highlights of the trip.

Spring

Fast forward to the spring of 2014 (March-April), our news was out.  We had planned our first Disney cruise, the year before, and it was time to set sail from Port Canaveral, Fl.  Not counting Theo's birth, this cruise was one of the best parts of 2014.

1-DSC_0017

I can't say enough good things about it.  No question that it is pricey, but it is definitely something to save up for.  From beginning to end, we all had an amazing time.  Disney knows how to do it right.

1-DSC_0052

Florida continues to remain one of our favorite home away from homes.  When we returned from the cruise, we enjoyed the remaining days of spring break in Tampa.  The kids got their bounce on at Airheads Trampoline park.

April

Back in BDA, and it was time for the rites of Spring - the Agricultural Fair, Easter weekend, kite flying, egg hunting, etc.  Above, Jordan performs with the boys team at the Ag show doing some tumbling on the stadium grounds.

May is for mothers, and my little Bean made my Mother's Day a special treat with nutella rice krispy squares.

I also started hitting nesting mode in late spring and insisted on a yard sale to clear out space.

Jordan also did extremely well at the annual school prize giving - earning special recognition for academic achievement,

July

The summer marked a milestone for both kids because they had their first experience at sleepaway camp.  For two weeks, the kids got a chance to enjoy summer without their parents.  Jordan trained at a gymnastics center and Mina went to a coed camp nearby in PA.  Both of them raved about their experiences, and Mina has asked to go longer this year.

I was a nervous wreck, of course, and missed them beyond belief, but it was made easier by being in the US during those weeks.  I caught up with friends and family, did some shopping, then helped bring the kids back home at the end of it.

image

Camp 2014

July was also about birthdays of course - Miss Mina turned 8.

August

The sweltering days of BDA summers were upon us, and I could barely make it off the couch at this point.

Unfortunately, Jordan contracted some random virus that had him feverish for days on end.  He wound up in the hospital until we finally got it down.  The kids had been scheduled to see Grandma H and Michael during this time.  That had to be postponed.

Untitled

Luckily though, there was still enough time left in the month to make it back to PA.  More adventures were had with Grandma and Michael leading the way.

September

School started early this year, and Theo decided the first day would make a perfect time for his appearance as well.

Jordan's expression says it all.  He instantly fell in love with the little guy.

image

image

October

Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year, and we continued to make it a fun day for us all.  Theo managed to get dressed up as well.

1-DSC_0155

October was scary for other reasons - namely the back to back hurricanes we had in the form of Fay and Gonzalo.

image

The silver lining though was our escape off the island.  For Gonzalo, we decided to bite the bullet and get off.  Escape to PA meant a chance to see family visiting the east coast as well!

image

Back in BDA, Mina entertained us all with her poetry - selected for the Saltus Poetry café.

image

November

November was a little quiet for Theo and I.  The big kids departed for the states with their dad to celebrate a family reunion over Thanksgiving.  We stayed behind and got a chance to bond in the early morning hours.  This might have been the first year in history I did not stuff myself with turkey and pumpkin pie.

Is it morning yet? #partyallnight

December

December is always a busy month here, and this year was no exception.  School Christmas assemblies occupy a big chunk of time, and this year, Mina was a little mouse.  She did so well!

image

Jordan also had the first overseas meet of the year in Boston.  Despite exceptional scores, he faced stiff competition.  No medals at this one, but we were super proud of him for competing at Level 5 for the first time.

1-IMG_1627

The remainder of the month was filled with holiday parties, music recitals, fabulous food and gift giving.

And of course, Christmas day, itself was spent basking in the brilliance of Bermuda beaches.  That's just how we roll!

1-DSC_0418

It's been the most astounding of years for us.  Our little family has increased by one, but our hearts have grown ten times larger with the love we have for him.  He's fit right in and is becoming the most delicious of babies.  Today (Jan 2) he is officially four months old.  He's smiling, laughing, reaching out for things, rolling over from tummy to back.  He lights up when he sees someone he recognizes, and is finally learning to relax in the car seat.  He's a great baby, and is over the initial colicky stage that beset him early on.  Although he isn't sleeping through the night yet, he consistently gives us 5-6 hour stretches in the evening.  He loves his bathtime, walks in the Bjorn, and his Little Mr. Sunshine in the chair rocker.

What's the matter?

We are a lucky family indeed!
